Redwood City

Nestled between the Santa Cruz mountains and the San Francisco Bay on the San Francisco Peninsula, Redwood City is located thirty miles south of San Francisco and  was the first to incorporate as a port city in 1867 during California’s Gold Rush. This golden city’s location gives it quick access to the arts of San Francisco, the beaches of Santa Cruz, San Francisco Airport, and the many amenities of the surrounding communities. Today’s Redwood City, with 86,000 residents, sits in the heart of Silicon Valley and is home to several global technology companies including Evernote, Box, and Informatica. At least fifteen biotechnology firms have offices in Redwood City, notably GenapSys and Teva Pharmaceuticals. Public, private, and charter school options abound with programs in Mandarin or Spanish language immersion, accelerated learning, gifted and talented (GATE), and Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM).

The founders of Redwood City surely didn’t know that they struck gold with a nearly perfect climate enjoyed by all who live there. The city’s motto, “Climate Best by Government Test,” is a nod to Redwood City sharing the world’s most optimal weather, with only Africa’s Canary Islands and the Mediterranean coast sharing that title. Described as not too hot, not too cool, and the right amount of precipitation, the weather is ideal for seemingly limitless outdoor recreational activities. Access to regional parks offering hiking, camping and beautiful views of the Bay Area is only fifteen minutes from downtown, and Edgewood County Park is known for its bountiful wildflowers. Bair Island and its Aquatic Center is another jewel in Redwood City’s crown, providing access to San Francisco Bay’s ecosystems and offers community paddling, rowing, and sculling programs.

Redwood City’s golden weather also makes it a premiere shopping and dining destination. Enjoy a wide variety of street shopping, from eclectic boutiques and jewelry shops to family-owned grocery stores, hobby shops, and global furniture stores. Relax at a coffee shop or have a fine dining experience at one of the city’s more than 100 cafes and restaurants. Eat dinner “al fresco”, then follow your meal with a movie at the city’s 20-screen movie theater. Explore local culture and arts at the San Mateo County History Museum, then, in summer, stay for the musical events or movies in Courthouse Square.  Redwood City engages its residents with many different holidays and festivals throughout the year. Celebrate New Year’s downtown or spend Lunar New Year watching dragons dance. Dress as a skeleton for Halloween and Día de los Muertos celebrations, wave American flags at the city’s Independence Day Parade or bring your dancing shoes to the Salsa festival in September. Or you can bring your beer stein to Oktoberfest to sip craft brews and eat brats in lederhosen or relax at a play under the stars with Shakespeare in the Park.

The secret is out about all that Redwood City has to offer. Whether you choose to enjoy the great outdoors, enjoy creature comforts, or pique your brain with culture and the arts, you will always strike it rich in Redwood City!
